Music = Mindfulness

Music is a brilliant platform you can use to practice mindfulness!

What is mindfulness?

I'm sure you've heard the word thrown around quite a bit lately. Mindfulness is a term that is used to capture the ability to be 100% focused on the present moment. Sounds easy, right? If you have ever tried any mindfulness activities, you will know it's actually not easy at all. As humans in today's society, we tend have A LOT going on in our lives, and it's all of that noise that can make it very difficult to stay present. Our minds wander as we start to think about everything else we need to worry about.

The benefits of mindfulness:

  1. Reduce Stress and anxiety
  2. Improve sleep
  3. Facilitates self-awareness
  4. Improve cognitive abilities
  5. Improve focus
  6. Assist with emotional regulation

Music and Mindfulness

Before you pick up your instrument and start practicing, you should take a deep breath and find focus in the present moment. This will help you tune into what you are about to do!

When learning to play an instrument, a new song, or are practicing your skills, you will most likely take part in practicing mindfulness. The intricate nature of the skill development forces us to focus on every detail to ensure we are able to surmount a challenge. When you are that 'tuned in', the background noise of every day life tends to hang back, allowing you to engage in mindfulness.

Mindfulness can be practiced in many different ways. Some other examples include meditation, breathing exercises, paying attention to everything you do while brushing your teeth or simply concentrating on each bite you take when eating. Playing an instrument is another tool that you could utilise to help you stay mindful and thus start experiencing some of those incredible benefits!
